The AIDS charity Red Hot has been promising an Arthur Russell tribute for a while now. Originally meant to be crowdfunded on Kickstarter, the 26 track (!) album is now being release via Yep Roc Records, and you can stream the whole thing over on NPR First Listen.
While the range of artists might not be the most adventurous – Hot Chip, Robyn, Sufjan Stevens… – there are some pretty fun and unpretentious efforts on there. Some try and cohere Russell’s deconstructed pop hits (José Gonzalez’s “This is How We Walk on the Moon”) and others project their Russell-influenced sheen back on the source material (Blood Orange’s “Is it All Over my Face?”) like some sexy snake biting itself on the tail. How’s that for a confusing Monday morning metaphor?
