A few months back, at the Cannes Film Festival, petulant critics were complaining about the lack of earth-shattering masterpieces on offer. Then came along Todd Haynes’ Carol, a tender lesbian relationship drama, and they all shut up. This was that earth-shattering masterpiece. The 50s-set romance, starring Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett as clandestine lovers, was instantly hailed as a standout and showered with plaudits (read our musings here).
The trailer features a snow-swept New York City and teary close-ups of its lovelorn leads. It’s dreamy, dramatic, romantic, and all kinds of awards-friendly. Oscar-bait has never looked this appealing.
