Hype. That's what surrounds writer/director Destin Daniel Cretton's tender dramedy, Short Term 12. But with seemingly good reason. The film took home the SXSW Grand Jury and Audience Award prizes this year, and was hailed by Slash Film as "a shining example of what cinema is all about".
Cretton's second feature, after 2012's I Am Not A Hipster, Short Term 12 follows the lives of workers at an adolescent foster care facility. It stars Brie Larson (21 Jump Street, Don Jon), Rami Malek (The Master) and John Gallagher Jr. (The Newsroom).
The trailer alone has us dazzled by Brie Larson's 'nuanced' performance, and the film as a whole is without doubt one of our most anticipated films of the year.
Short Term 12 opens on August 23 in the U.S., Canadian and UK release dates pending. Stay tuned, y'all.
