Trailer: The Extraordinary-Looking Documentary 'American Promise'

"Over 14 years in the making"...

Well-received at this year's Sundance Film Festival, Michèle Stephenson's acclaimed documentary American Promise follows her own son (Idris) and his best friend (Seun), from their first day of kindergarten through high school graduation. The film shows how their lives diverge as they navigate an elite, Ivy League New York City prep school in an America still largely segregated by race and class.

The first theatrical release trailer has landed (below), showing just how personal this story really is. But as remarkable as it surely will be, we can't help but think this looks kinda like a real-life Truman Show scenario? Which is pretty disturbing, obviously.

American Promise continues to play the festival circuit and will open in New York City on October 18th, and then in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Atlanta, the Bay Area, Chicago and Detroit. More to be announced soon.
