Ever wonder how Richard Ayoade might follow his brilliant coming-of-age Wes Anderson-esque debut Submarine? Bet you didn't guess it would be a comedy adapted from a Fyodor Dostoyevsky novella, did you? NO.
The first trailer for The Double has landed and as you can see, it's decidedly different from his colourful French New Wave-inspired debut. This comedy, which was co-written by Ayoade and Avi Korine (Harmony Korine's bro), follows Jesse Eisenberg's character who is driven insane by the appearance of his doppelganger. We're not quite sure where the other actors – Yasmin Paige (Submarine), Mia Wasikowska, James Fox and Noah Taylor – come into it, but you can see Yasmin Paige looking cool, holding a gun. And as Godard knew, a girl and a gun is essential in any movie – works for us; although throwing two Jesse Eisenbergs into the mix is pretty freaky.
After Submarine we knew big things were in store for Ayoade as a director, and it seems The Double places him among the ranks of the most interesting filmmakers of today's generation. The film will premiere at TIFF tomorrow so we'll soon know what all the critics make of it, not that they're always right or anything.
