"A head-spinning trip into the far corners of the English psyche," says Danny Leigh. You can just tell this is classic Ben Wheatley – it's got that old school psychedelic vibe that's always present in his films (Kill List, Sightseers), although here it seems to have floated significantly closer to the surface.
From the film's title, A Field In England, we presumed this one might be fairly minimal. And from the looks of the trailer, we were right. But with the help of actors Julian Barratt (The Mighty Boosh) and Michael Smiley (Kill List), this British horror looks anything but bland or unambitious. Here's some more info on the story...
England during the Civil War.
A small group of deserters flee from a raging battle through an overgrown field. They are captured by two men: O'Neil and Cutler. O'Neil (Michael Smiley), an alchemist, forces the group to aid him in his search to find a hidden treasure that he believes is buried in the field.
Crossing a vast mushroom circle, which provides their first meal, the group quickly descend into a chaos of arguments, fighting and paranoia, and, as it becomes clear that the treasure might be something other than gold, they slowly become victim to the terrifying energies trapped inside the field.
'A Field In England' is released on 5 July.
