The Brainfeeder session musician Kamasi Washington steps into the limelight with the announcement of his afro-futurist/jazz-fusion three-hour debut LP, The Epic.
It’s the first explicitly jazz album to be released on Flying Lotus’ imprint, although they’ve been heading that way lately (Kamasi played on FlyLo’s last two albums). It looks and sounds like something from the Black Arts Movement days – Harry Whitaker, Archie Shepp, and Sun-Ra all come to mind. The 14-minute ‘Re Run Home’ was released yesterday and gives a sense of what a grand ensemble Washington has marshalled. According to Fact, there was a “32-piece orchestra and 20-person choir” along with Washington’s own band. The Epic is out 4 May.
